Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is an automatic identification method, relying on storing and remotely retrieving data using devices called RFID tags or transponders. An RFID tag can be incorporated into a product, animal, or person for the purpose of identification using radiowaves.

The bottom line is that RFID is now being used for security, safety, error prevention, anticounterfeiting, cost reduction, increasing sales, entertainment, crime prevention, customer convenience and art and there is more to come. It is rather as if we had just invented the wheel… or paper.

With young and very small children the issues are more about ensuring they stay where they should be, rather than wandering into danger. equally, doors, handles and escape devices which are essentially designed around adults, need to be child-friendly.

The challenge

Springwell school is a designated day special school for pupils with complex learning diffi culties aged from 4-11 years. Many pupils have associated disabilities including speech and language disorders, autism and challenging behaviour.

The school is re-locating to a new building with eight classrooms, a variety of specialist teaching areas including a hydrotherapy pool, multi-sensory room, soft play room, ICT area, art and cookery rooms. Nurseries and Primary schools.

The solution

Securing an area with young children doesn’t necessarily need expensive locks or keys, it may just be a case of raising the handle above their reach. However, arriving at solutions that will work for both staff and pupils equally effectively needs careful consideration.

At Springwell, we provided perimeter doors with two points of locking. An escape sashlock allows secure mechanical locking out of hours with a physical deadbolt, whilst a high level Nightlatch [out of the reach of the children] provides day time access and egress.

A compatible electric strike provides emergency escape for everyone which can be controlled and supervised.

To ensure that our products can withstand the rigours of school life, we not only ensure the product meets the relevant standards, but also have our own independently accredited testing facilities.
