Innovations in design and application
ASSA ABLOY may be the global leader in door opening solutions, but we also know a thing or two about the wider sphere of security, asset tracking and access control - and as we exploit the potential of joining up technologies and ideas - there's a wealth of opportunity beyond. You'll see just a small selection of our ideas here - come back soon because we're always coming up with more!
1. Brighthandle
The history of Brighthandle can be traced back to 2001 when Alexander Lervik, lead designer and co-founder of Brighthandle came up with the idea to create a door handle that communicates with colored light. Alexander created a prototype that he displayed at the Milan fare for interior design in 2001. The response was massive. The Brighthandle product was considered one of the most innovative products on the fare and it was selected ‘product of the year’ in the hardware category in prestigious American magazine, Architectural Record.

Intelligent use of electronic locking has helped to revolutionise the way buildings are secured and this has had a knock-on effect to how they are designed. If the layout of a building has been designed to take into account the features and functionality that electronic locking and smartcard technology can deliver, it can mean the difference between a friendly, accessible, yet secure place – and a building that is difficult to use and administer, with highly visible and inhospitable security.

The lock that looks more like a mobile phone with a system that behaves like a car key. This has really taken off in the far east and is ideal for student halls of residence and other high traffic areas where security needs to accommodate high turnaraounds of users and the need for key replacement (and lock reprogramming) in case of loss or theft. But the really great thing about this system is that the keys are totally ‘uncloneable’. Every time the key interacts with the lock, it verifies the existing code and creates a random new one when it’s taken out – ready for next time. So when keys are lost, there’s no loss in security. Clever. And it can do all those other things that smart systems do – access control, user restriction, tracking management, data storage, system integration, internet authorization, e-commerce and so on…

Life just got much simpler for homecare visitors in Randers, Denmark. The home carers spent their days moving from house to house visiting clients, lugging around a large set of keys to an aging, mechanical locking system.

The core of the Hi-O concept is an information data bus, connecting all the door devices to each other instead of a central door controller. The intelligence is built into each and every device instead of centralized in one dedicated logic unit.

In an emergency, people must be able to quickly and easily find their way out of a building. Well-functioning doorways, enhanced with audible and visible alerts, play an important role in ensuring safe egress. We have developed complete doorway systems that integrate luminescent technology into commercial grade doors, frames and exit hardware. Simple.
